Our family made an underwater porthole for a photo! 🐟💙 #NetflixPartner When @Netflix asked us to help celebrate Earth Week by making a magical photo, we decided to create an underwater scene inspired by the Netflix documentary “My Octopus Teacher”. This documentary follows the hero, Craig, and his magical relationship with an octopus! It had us all in tears, and it made us think further about the small and big ways we can continue to encourage our kids to respect and connect with the beauty found in nature. Oliver has always cared for all creatures, from tiny ants to giant whales, so we wanted to portray his love of nature by showing his connection with his favorite animal, the octopus. We repurposed octopus tentacles we had made for a different photo by painting them, then thrifted as much of the props as possible, and handmade the rest. It took us three separate tries to finally capture it all 😅. By the third time, we decided to head out before sunrise to give ourselves the best possible chance at capturing this moment, and it finally worked! We used ocean water to fill our glass aquarium, natural food dye from vegetables to darken the water, and seaweed we found at the beach to bring the underwater scene together. Just like this photoshoot, sometimes you have to try and try again to make a difference, and that’s what we hope to teach our kids: never give up! Even though Earth Week has passed, our family will continue to appreciate nature year round.
